Basic Hammer and chisels

Postby kurisu on Mon Dec 15, 2008 8:37 am

Hi People,

For anyone that might be interested these are the basic chisels and a couple of stones.

The hammer is made from a piece of 52100 ball bearing steel , The handle shape is good because when you pick it up it tends to fall straight in your hand at the right angle to your work, for me anyway.

All chisels made from power hacksaw blades high speed steel .

All square blanks .The three there will do 99 percent of all your needs

The one on the bottom for under cutting your inlays .

Middle one for most of your engraving cuts.

Top one is used for manly fine shading.
I guess thats a start anyway Thanks .Kurisu

Thanks Kurisu,

Any chance of getting a better idea of the tip shaps for each chissel?
I know it's hard to photograph something so small, maybe a diagram - even if its from another website?

Sorry to be a nagger..... but this is interesting to me.

Cheers Glen.

Hi Glen,
I hope this helps a bit , I made a chisel shape out of 10 mm square for size so you could see better i hope.
Top pic is side view .next front, last two shows putting on the heel.

Side view shows the face of the tool should be around 45 to 50 degrees.
Bottom is stoneing heel on first left side then right, The heel need only come back half a m m you can go a little more or less .

The only reason for a heel is to lift your hand up to cut and clear your work .Without heel it will bury straight in and stop.
to much heel your hand will be to high, to little your hand will be on your work ,
you have to play a bit. I normally run it along the stone about four or five times each side .

I hope this helps a bit .
I made a jig out of angle iron to put the 45 on the face when i get a chance i will take a pic saves a lot of time sharpening .better to be cutting than sharpening I use a 3mm hardend rod on the stone to run along and only stick tool over about 12 mm . Thank you Kurisu.

Hi ,
This is the quick jig i made to put the face on all your chisels.

You just hold your chisel there and slide your stone across the top
same face every time . The bolt will allow you to put any degrees you wish just turn in or out .on very tuff metal you tend to chip a bit this is very quick to fix
Hope this helps a little ,Thanks Kurisu.

My shout next time.

Got 3 gravers made, and an inlay punch. And they work!!!
Just gotta get some magnifying glasses and make a sharpening jig.
Oh and a diamond stone and lap stone.

Thanks for all your help.
